There is never a season when I don't enjoy the Fells. I moved to Stoneham nine years and one month ago. At the time I owned a small terrier mix dog, and, as I live close to the Fells, and dogs need to be walked daily, we walked/hiked almost every day in the Fells. Now however we don't-- there are too many loose dogs (especially packs led by 'professional' animal walkers who should know better)and on three different occasions my dog (always on leash) was attacked. So we walk along the edge of the Fells now-- better than nothing, though I do occasionally get in there on my own, to walk, sketch, meditate, play my drum, and basically recharge.

There is a nice stretch of junipers along Route 28 between Gate 24 and the wetlands right before the intersection of Route 28 and North Border Route; most of them have became smothered with oriental bittersweet and my 'give back to the Fells' task this summer has been to remove the bittersweet from the junipers-- it's an ongoing task, to put it euphemistically-- anyone want to help? I've uncovered about half of them thus far. It's not an especially nice area of the Fells, running as it does along 93 and 28, and lots of trash from both roads wherever you look-- and loud!--so therefore it needs all the help it can get. I also love to see/hear the first American Woodcocks in the spring in the Fells-- that's probably my favorite activity here. But it's all good, and one of the main reasons I stay in this area. What a treasure we have! Now, if only we could get people to obey the leash law...
